Shows which mattered!

It is not always that you go to a movie theater and watch an entertaining movie. Sometimes you just want to lie on your couch and watch some old-fashioned television shows. However, this “post 2000” generation, unfortunately had to deal with the saas-bahu fights and unnecessary drama.

Little does a today’s teenager know about the classic shows that we grew up with. Shows, which made our entire week. Shows, which had the craze to stop traffic and pull the society together. Here I have compiled a list of 10 such shows from our 90’s and early 2000 are which this generation missed.

  1. Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayana

ramanand-sagar25e225802599s-ramayan-1986-25e225802593-all-episodes-211x300

This epic mythology is something, which ruled our television screens for a long time. This show had fan following like anything. I am talking about a time when there were limited TV shows and even fewer television sets. However, this show broke all records. People used to gather around in communities to watch this great saga. Those evil laughs, those CGIs & sounds made it a household name and something people would follow like religion. The actors of the show were always remembered for their portrayals of Lord Rama, Hanuman and Ravana even in their real life.

  1. Ramanand Sagar’s Mahabharata

x240-hjt

After the enormous success of Ramayana, the makers of the show brought another mythology to life through Mahabharata. I am sure some of us out there still can remember that “Mahabharata” announcement made in the title track. The show received almost, the same response and same enthusiasm from everyone. Elders and kids, all watched it together and learned alike.

  1. Byomkesh Bakshi

byomkesh-bakshi-tv-series_1993

No no, I am not the talking about the Sushant Singh starrer movie. Byomkesh Bakshi, also known as Indian Sherlock Holmes, is by far the most appreciated and loved detective show ever. The show was based around a Bengali detective who along with his friend Ajit helped police solves interesting/complex cases. Interesting stories and intelligence of the detective made it one interesting and gripping show to watch late night. The character created by Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay was brought to life by Rajit Kapur did full justice to the character.

  1. Ye Jo hai Zindagi

showposter

This is light hearted sitcom had everything right. The show revolved around a married couple, a brother-in-law, and the troubles they got into. The show had actors like Rakesh Bedi, Satish Shah to make us laugh.

  1. Flop Show

flop_show

Jaspal Bhatti’s Flop show was nothing like its name. The show took a satirical view on the societal problems. The story revolved around a family who got into funny situations. The show started with a band performance, which mocked the show for being a “Flop Show”.

  1. Shaktiman

Shaktiman…Shaktiman…Shaktiman…India’s first superhero. Pandit Gangadhar Vidhyadar Shashtri a.k.a Shaktiman portrayed by Mukesh Khanna was liked by kids and parents alike. The superhero got these powers through yoga and taught important life lessons to kids post his show. The bright red suit, with a sun as his logo was popular throughout the 90’s and early 2000.

  1. Shriman Shrimati

Shriman ji, pyari Shrimati ji, another one of the classics of the 90’s. The plot of the show is still being used in many of the TV-shows airing currently. Keshav and Dilruba played by Jatin Kanakia and Rakesh Bedi were neighbours, had a secret admiration for each other’s wife. The show had funny where each tried to impress their neighbour’s wife.

  1. Yes Boss

yes-boss-tv-series_1999

Rakesh Bedi in yet another sitcom. A boss, who likes his female employee but does not know that she’s married to another co-employee Rakesh Bedi, The show revolved around situations where Rakesh Bedi tried to keep his job and his wife safe from his boss,.

  1. Dekh Bhai Dekh

The series revolved around the three generations of the Diwan family and the vicissitudes they had. It was a pure and innocent comedy show involving various family situations and plots to tickle our funny bones.

  1. Sarabhai vs. Sarabhai

sarabhai1

One of my personal favourite shows. This show entered into the life’s of its viewers like no other show. The show revolved around a wealthy family and their son who get married to a middle class family. Characters of this received love like no other and the dialogues become part of daily conversations. Poetry of Roshesh, Monisha’s middle class habits, Maya’s sophisticated hypocrisy and Indravardan’s pranks. The characters of this show became members of our family.

There were other shows as well that came to my mind like Office Office, Zaban Shambhal ke, Tu Tu Main Main, Karamchand and many more.

Now for the news, which prompted me to write this blog, Sarabhai vs. Sarabhai is coming back. It will be coming back as a web series.

Indian cinema recently completed its 100 glorious years. 10 decades of work, skill and entertainment and still going strong, producing Masterpieces, making Legends and achieving Milestones.

Still when it comes to original content, Indian cinema has a scarcity of originality. “Inspiration” is what they call when they rip off a scene from a foreign movie. The latest addition to this long list of “inspirations” is the multi-starrer blockbuster movie DILWALE. I was surprised first when I saw a car chase scene between Kajol and Sharukh Khan, a complete mirror work of a Hollywood movie Mission Impossible II (2000).

Well ripping off scenes especially fight scenes or car chases is pretty common and somehow the Mission Impossible series is I think their favourite. Not long ago, another Rohit Shetty blockbuster “Singham Returns”, which also had numerous scenes blatantly copied from the Hollywood franchise.

WWE: Too much talent for WWE to handle!!

World Wrestling Entertainment, which has over 150 superstars signed in Raw, Smackdown and NXT, but only a handful have got a chance to get to the limelight.  Over the decade superstars like John Cena, Randy Orton, Batista, CM Punk and The Shield being the newest to enter the limelight.

World Wrestling Entertainment aka WWE, which the probably the biggest wrestling franchises in the world. WWE superstars, pay-per views, events, movies and apps they have their hands in everything. It is a multi-billion dollar entertainment business now. Over the years it has produced legends and icons like Bruno Sammartino, Hulk Hogan, The Undertaker, The Rock, John Cena and the most recent the leader of the yes movement Daniel Bryan. However, there are superstars who are if not more still equally talented and deserve a shot at the spot light. Kofi Kingston, Dolph Ziggler, Zack Ryder, The Miz, Mark Henry to name a few superstars who have been never taken seriously by the company.

WWE over the years has been sticking to the old formula of dividing the superstars on good or bad base depending on how the WWE universe reacts to them. John Cena being the leader of Cenation, Daniel Bryan leader of the yes movement, but what about Dolph Ziggler? Zack Ryder? Such superstars who are also appreciated by the audience equally but are rarely given centre stage to show off their skills. When they do, it is short lived. Dolph Ziggler became the World Heavyweight Champion only for 3 months out of which he was out of action for 1 month due to injury. Zack Ryder’s maximum glory to fame was when he was made the number one contender for WWE championship against Sheamus.  Kofi Kingston who has given amazing OMG! Moments for past three Royal Rumble pay per view has only became the Intercontinental Champion and does never have a legitimate title shot.

It’s not just that WWE has a difficult time accommodating young talent, there are veterans in the locker room who have been with the company for years now but have been never given a more central role, but just being used a fillers for the show. Mark Henry who has been with WWE for over 15 years now, became the World Heavyweight Champion in 2013 only for 6 months. Other Superstars who were signed by the WWE from other companies but were never given any proper role were Kevin Nash, Booker T, Christian, Sin Cara and many others who have taken by other positions like commentary( JBL), support staff( Finlay), the GM of Smackdown for sometime ( Booker T) but now not sure what or where he is.  Superstars have expressed their wish of being more in the spotlight on platforms like Twitter or other WWE interactions but were not given any serious thought by the brains of WWE.

No doubt, WWE has been a successful enterprise for years and will continue to do so in the future as well. However, they need to experiment and need to bring new faces in the front. They are at a position where they can afford to take some risks and who knows it might pay of well. The Wyatt Family, Daniel Bryan, Sheamus, Cersaro, The Shield are examples of the experiment referred to. After all, it is only after to do something new that a new era of WWE will be born and new superstars will get to show off their talent…

Triple H Vs Mcmahon’s conflict of interest

wwe-1775260http://static.sportskeeda.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/wwe-1775260.jpg

The Mcmahon family again has brought there personal problems to WWE platform. Monday Night Raw for the past few weeks has become a tug of war battle between Triple H and Vince Mcmahon. For the past two weeks on Monday Night Raw, the Mcmahon family has been all over the place with Stephanie McMahon, Triple H and Vince Mcmahon all being present on the show at the same time afters years.

The whole thing started about a month ago when Triple H could not complete his match against Curtix Axel, a client of Paul Heyman. Stephanie would come to Raw next week with a shocking announcement that her husband Triple H won’t be wrestling again, which was in turn a decision supported by his father Vince Mcmahon. But Triple H had other plans and went on with his match with Curtix Axel, to which Vince Mcmahon did not take kindly. He ended the the match, but Triple H being the COO of the company had the match restarted again. Then finally Vince put an end to this cat and mice game by taking the ring bell with him to the back stage area, leaving Triple H completely embarrassed and helpless in the ring.

Since then nothing seems to be working out between the family.  The ego’s of all three individuals seems to be taking a toll on Vickie Guerrero the Managing Supervisor of Monday Night Raw, who is caught in the middle of all this. Triple and Vince Mcmahon have had numerous battles and confrontations in the past.  Shawn Michaels the co-founder of D Generation X along with Triple have had some of the memorable matches against the Mcmahon family over the years.  This “conflict of interest amongst the Mcmahon family seems far from over right now and will take more bizarre and extreme folds in the coming episodes of Raw.
